In the recent round of interviews to promote Avatar James Cameron has hinted at the Blu-ray features we can expect. Quiet surprisingly, given the effort put in to the development of the 3D technology to make the film and the tie in with Panasonic’s release of it’s 3d Plasma’s TV’s, the initial release will most likely not be in 3d. Instead there will be another release with 3D support later in 2010.

Cameron has stated, “Probably the initial Blu-ray release of Avatar won’t be in 3-D and then a subsequent release will be in 3-D. That’s my guess right now. So we will probably put out a disk, you know, in six or eight months, let’s call it six months, and then after that we will have a 3-D disc when there are enough sets available.”

I guess the tie in with Panasonic will still happen but it makes sense to release a 3D version later as more 3D TV’s become available to consumers.

Whichever Blu-ray version you opt for it will feature over 10 minutes of deleted scenes.

In an interview with MTV Cameron explained that the deleted scenes provided more background on Pandora’s native Na’vi, “It’s all wonderful stuff, but it was sort of bogging down the middle section of the Movie,” Cameron said. “So there’s plenty for a value-added DVD experience on this film. Of course, we’ll have to go punch it all up and get it all mixed and stuff like that.” Another scene features Jake Sully hunting a local creature as part of a tribal inauguration.

When it is released in 3D Avatar will utilise the new Blu-ray 3D specification.

Avatar will be released in the UK as a collectors item Steelbook edition.
